“Having a physician involved in your care changes what’s possible — not just medically, but in how we understand what’s driving the pattern and what it will take to shift it.”
I’m Dr. David Klein, a Family Physician and GP Psychotherapist licensed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. I’m a member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Ontario Medical Association, and the Medical Psychotherapy Association of Canada. I work with the Spotlight Recovery team in a consulting role.
My approach combines practical skills with insight-oriented therapy, helping patients better understand their thoughts, emotions, and behaviour patterns. I work with substance use challenges alongside anxiety, depression, trauma-related concerns, and other co-occurring mental health conditions. My care draws on evidence-based modalities including ACT, DBT, CBT, IFS, and trauma-focused therapies, guided by thorough biopsychosocial assessment to ensure each treatment plan reflects the individual in front of me.
Treatment focuses on understanding relapse risk, building emotional regulation skills, exploring relationship patterns shaped by earlier experiences, supporting identity development during recovery, and preparing patients for a stable transition back to community living.
I’ve completed postgraduate psychotherapy training through the Medical Psychotherapy Association of Canada (MDPAC), the National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine (NICABM), and Massachusetts General Hospital’s Psychiatry Academy. I hold advanced training in trauma care for professionals working in high-stress and operational environments, through the Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs WRIISC, along with advanced certification in National Security and Intelligence from the University of Ottawa.
Why having a physician on the team matters
Addiction rarely happens in isolation. Many clients carry concurrent health concerns — physical symptoms, medication questions, sleep disruption, chronic pain — that intersect with their substance use or mental health in ways a non-medical practitioner can’t fully address.
Dr. Klein’s presence in the network means those questions can be held within the same team rather than farmed out to a separate GP who doesn’t know your recovery context. It also means that when a clinical concern needs to be escalated, it already has a home.
Dr. Klein consults with our team rather than carrying a caseload, and only rarely takes on a client directly. If his approach is what you’re after, Tyler Walker is a Registered Psychotherapist working along the same lines. Call and we’ll point you to the right person on the team.

A physician who also practises psychotherapy. Dr. Klein is a Family Physician certified with the College of Family Physicians of Canada and licensed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, with postgraduate psychotherapy training on top of his medical training.
The short version: the medical picture and the psychological one are held by the same person, rather than split between a family doctor and a therapist who never speak to each other.
Not at the moment — Dr. Klein is currently not accepting new clients. He works with Spotlight Recovery in a consulting role, which means his input shapes how the team approaches care rather than being booked session by session.
If you want to start with someone who is taking clients, call 705-715-1168 and we’ll work out the right match on the first conversation.
Addiction rarely arrives on its own. Physical symptoms, medication questions, disrupted sleep, chronic pain — these sit right alongside substance use and mental health, and a non-medical practitioner can only go so far with them.
Having Dr. Klein in the network means those questions stay inside the same team instead of being handed to a separate GP who knows nothing about your recovery. And when something clinical needs escalating, it already has somewhere to go.
Practical skills work alongside insight-oriented therapy — helping people understand the thoughts, emotions and behaviour patterns underneath what they’re doing. He draws on ACT, DBT, CBT, IFS and trauma-focused approaches, chosen from a thorough biopsychosocial assessment rather than a fixed program.
In practice the work tends to centre on understanding relapse risk, building emotional regulation, looking at relationship patterns shaped by earlier experiences, supporting identity through recovery, and preparing for a stable return to community living.
Dr. Klein’s CPSO number is 73941. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario keeps a public register anyone can search by name or number.
Every clinician here has their designation and registration number on their bio for exactly that reason — you can look us up before you ever speak to us.
